Deliberate, not decorative.
Not all sensory experiences land the same way. A slow pulse of warm light feels different from a strobe; a harmonious chord feels different from a clash; a form drawn from nature feels different from visual noise. Everyone knows this from the inside — and it matters most to the people whose nervous systems are most easily overwhelmed. Every choice in the work — in a daytime sensory garden as much as an evening installation — is made with that in mind.
So we choose with care. Our sound is tuned so that nothing in the space can clash with anything else. Our light moves at a settled pace — some of it literally paced to the rhythm of calm breathing. Our forms draw on shapes and proportions found in nature. We draw on psychoacoustics — the study of how people respond to sound and space — and on patterns of proportion and tuning that recur across centuries of architecture and music.
We’re not dismissing abstract or challenging art; it has its place and purpose. Ours is a different, deliberate aim: spaces designed to be welcoming to nervous systems that are easily overwhelmed — and we want to know, honestly, how well they do it.
How we’ll know if it works.
Our design hypothesis is simple to state: an environment built on coherence — light, sound, pace and space working together rather than competing — is designed to support calm and participation, not force it. That’s a claim we intend to test, not assert.
In our first year, we’ll learn in the most human way available:
- Visitors tell us. Simple before-and-after conversations — how do you feel in your body right now? — in plain language, never medical forms.
- The people who know them best tell us. Carers, teachers and family members can see a shift the visitor may not put into words. They hold the baseline; they see the difference.
- The installation itself tells us. The work naturally logs how people engage — which modules draw people in, how long they stay, what they return to. Objective, built-in, and nothing extra strapped to anyone.
That’s deliberate. Many of the people we design for have good reasons to be wary of being measured. We’d rather gather evidence through relationship and observation, with consent, than instrument anyone. Physiological measurement may join the picture in later phases, done properly, with the right partners and ethics — but we won’t lead with devices, and we won’t claim results we don’t have.
Coherent Sensory Spaces — at proposal stage.
Our research programme, Coherent Sensory Spaces, is at proposal stage. We’re seeking an academic host, advisors — including neurodivergent and medical advisors — and collaborators across psychoacoustics, sensory and autism research, to help us study how this kind of space can best serve the people it’s designed for.
There’s little gap between making and learning here: we watch how people respond to the work, we listen to the people it’s for and those who support them, and what we learn shapes the next piece.
And we share it. We intend to release what we learn as open knowledge, so that others building sensory-accessible work can use it rather than start from scratch.
